Mary Lottridge

Mary Lottridge is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr College of Art and Design and she has had an ongoing studio practice for over thirty years.
Mary works in acrylics on wood cradles and the paintings often possess textured and collaged surfaces. Her paintings frequently revolve around a central foreground image, usually rendered in a crisp decisive manner with a high degree of detail and sharp focus, with backgrounds possessing a more elusive quality, layered and washed-out and containing partially covered shapes and lines, as well as pattern, colour and text. The work has a strongly contemporary feel and is technically proficient and visually striking.
“The bedrock of my work is an urgent engagement with materials and image and the vexing uncertainty and simultaneously thrilling act of painting. Milton Glaser says ‘Making things is one of the truly remedial aspects of being human’. He also says that finding things is not the same as making things. I want to make paintings.”
Mary’s work has been exhibited widely in Ontario and British Columbia and can be found in many corporate and personal collections. She currently lives and works on Pender Island, British Columbia.
